Flossing is an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene, yet studies have shown that most people do not floss properly. Whether it’s due to sensory issues or simply poor technique, improper flossing can have detrimental effects on our oral health. Bleeding gums, a common result of incorrect flossing, can be off-putting and may even lead to gum damage. In fact, incorrect flossing techniques can create clefts by cutting the gum, potentially causing gum recession. These findings highlight the importance of finding effective methods to reduce gum bleeding and improve overall oral health.
To fully appreciate the significance of proper flossing, it is essential to understand its purpose. Flossing helps disrupt the biofilm cities created by oral microbes, which serve as a protective mechanism for these bacteria. Our mouths harbor both good and bad bacteria, and they attach themselves to our teeth, providing easy access to our bloodstream. When our body responds to this invasion, it can lead to inflammation not only in our mouths but also in other parts of our bodies, including the heart and brain. Furthermore, research has linked oral inflammation to various diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Therefore, finding effective flossing techniques becomes crucial in preventing these health complications.
A team of researchers led by periodontologist David Basali from Tufts University embarked on a study to identify a flossing technique that could reduce gum bleeding. The study involved 36 participants, all of whom showed early signs of dental disease. The researchers conducted a randomized and single-blinded clinical trial, providing a group of volunteers with specific flossing instructions while allowing a control group to continue their usual flossing routine.
During the eight-week trial period, the participants underwent assessments four times. The trial group, consisting of individuals who followed the provided flossing instructions, demonstrated significant improvement in their flossing technique. An impressive 88 percent of the trial group mastered the adapted horizontal vertical flossing technique (AHVFT) and experienced a remarkable 70 percent reduction in gum bleeding. In contrast, the control group, who continued with their usual flossing routine, only saw a 30 percent reduction in gum bleeding. These findings highlight the importance of proper flossing to achieve optimal oral health.
The participants in the trial group were prescribed the adapted horizontal vertical flossing technique (AHVFT), which involves the following steps:
1. Cut off approximately 32 cm (18 inches) of floss.
2. With palms facing each other, wind each end around the fourth finger of each hand, leaving about 12 cm (6 inches) of floss between both hands.
3. Fold hands towards the suspended floss, so palms face down, and hold the floss between the thumb and index finger of each hand.
4. Gently place the floss between two teeth, using the thumb and index finger to control the floss and prevent it from cutting into the gum.
5. Move the floss back and forth in a sawing motion against the side of one tooth while applying upward and downward pressure, simulating the action of drying one’s back with a towel.
6. Repeat this technique for all teeth.
The study’s participants, mainly dental students and assistants, exhibited a high rate of compliance with the AHVFT technique. According to periodontologist Paul Levi, this study is the first of its kind to prove that using a specific flossing technique can effectively reduce gum infection compared to individuals who stick to their usual flossing routines. These findings have significant implications for individuals seeking to improve their oral health and reduce gum bleeding.
