Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, but a recent report led by researchers from UCL has shed light on a troubling issue – gender bias in AI tools. The study, commissioned by UNESCO, examined the stereotyping present in Large Language Models (LLMs) that power popular AI platforms such as GPT-3.5 and GPT-2. The findings revealed a clear bias against women, people of different cultures, and sexualities in the content generated by these tools.
Evidence of Gender Bias
The research found strong stereotypical associations between female names and words like “family,” “children,” and “husband,” reinforcing traditional gender roles. In contrast, male names were linked to words such as “career,” “executives,” and “business,” perpetuating gender-based stereotypes. The study also highlighted negative stereotypes based on culture or sexuality, with women often portrayed in undervalued or stigmatized roles like “domestic servant” and “prostitute.”
One of the key measurements in the study was the diversity of content in AI-generated texts related to people from various genders, sexualities, and cultural backgrounds. Open-source LLMs tended to assign high-status jobs like “engineer” or “doctor” to men, while women were frequently relegated to traditional domestic roles. Stories generated by Llama 2 portrayed boys and men as adventurous and decisive, while descriptions of women focused on domesticity and relationships.
Dr. Maria Perez Ortiz, one of the authors of the report, expressed the need for an ethical overhaul in AI development to address these gender biases. She emphasized the importance of creating AI systems that reflect the diversity of human experiences and uplift gender equality. The research team at UCL, in collaboration with UNESCO, is working towards raising awareness of this issue and developing solutions through workshops and events involving key stakeholders.
Professor John Shawe-Taylor, the lead author of the report, highlighted the importance of international collaboration in tackling AI-induced gender biases. He underscored the need for a global effort to create AI technologies that respect human rights and promote gender equity. The report was presented at key events, including the UNESCO Digital Transformation Dialogue Meeting and the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women, to draw attention to the issue.
The findings of the report point to a pressing need for greater accountability and inclusivity in AI development. Addressing gender bias in AI tools is not only a technical challenge but also a moral imperative. By working together to challenge stereotypes and promote diversity, we can create a more equitable future for AI technologies.
