The Dangers of Unregulated Practices in the Beauty Industry

The recent report released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sheds light on the alarming consequences of unregulated practices in the beauty industry. The case of a spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where unsanitary procedures led to five suspected cases of HIV, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent regulations and oversight.

The so-called ‘vampire facial’ procedure, which involves drawing blood from a vein, separating platelets, and reinjecting them into the skin using microneedling, has gained popularity in recent years. Despite claims of various benefits such as wrinkle reduction and scar visibility, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is scarce.

In 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health opened an investigation into the spa following a report of a woman testing positive for HIV after receiving a facial procedure. Subsequent contact tracing revealed four female clients and a male sexual partner of one of the women testing positive for HIV, with the earliest case dating back to 2016. The investigation uncovered a range of unsanitary practices at the spa, including storing blood and injectables in a kitchen refrigerator and using unwrapped syringes.

The case highlights the critical need for regulation in the beauty industry, particularly for invasive procedures like the vampire facial. Practitioners are required to have a medical license to perform such procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of clients. Additionally, maintaining proper records of clients and appointments is crucial for contact tracing in case of any infections or adverse reactions.

The owner of the spa, Maria de Lourdes Ramos De Ruiz, pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without a license, leading to a jail sentence and restitution to those infected. This case serves as a cautionary tale for other practitioners and spa owners who may be engaging in similar practices without proper licensure and oversight.

The incident at the Albuquerque spa underscores the dangers of unregulated practices in the beauty industry and the potential risks to clients’ health and safety. It is imperative for regulatory authorities to enforce strict guidelines and monitor compliance to prevent such incidents from reoccurring. Clients should also be vigilant and ensure that the practitioners and facilities they choose adhere to the necessary regulations and standards to protect their well-being.
