Sex is often touted as having numerous physical and psychological benefits. From reducing high blood pressure to improving the immune system and aiding in better sleep, the act of sex and orgasm can have a positive impact on overall well-being. It releases oxytocin, also known as the love hormone, which helps build trust and bonding between partners.
Despite the many benefits of sex, there is a dark side that is often overlooked. It is a rare occurrence, but people have been known to die during or shortly after engaging in sexual activity. While the incidence is extremely low, accounting for only 0.6 percent of all sudden death cases, it is important to understand the reasons behind this phenomenon.
Causes of Sudden Cardiac Death During Sex
There are several reasons why sudden cardiac death may occur during sex. In most cases, it is attributed to the physical strain of the activity, as well as the use of prescription drugs such as those used to treat erectile dysfunction. Additionally, the use of illegal drugs, such as cocaine, can also increase the risk of sudden death.
Forensic Studies on Sudden Cardiac Death
Forensic studies on sudden death during sex have shown that the risk is higher as people age. A study conducted in Germany over a 33-year period found that 0.2 percent of sudden deaths occurred during sexual activity, with the majority of cases involving men with an average age of 59 years. The most common cause of death was a heart attack.
Recent research from St George’s, University of London, has shown that sudden cardiac death during sex is not limited to middle-aged men. The study found that 0.2 percent of sudden cardiac deaths occurred during or within one hour of sexual activity, with the average age of death being 38 years. Surprisingly, 35 percent of these cases occurred in women.
Underlying Causes of Death
The study also revealed that these deaths were not typically caused by heart attacks, as seen in older men. Instead, sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) was the most common cause of death, followed by aortic dissection and structural anomalies such as cardiomyopathy. These conditions can lead to a sudden abnormal heart rhythm, ultimately resulting in cardiac arrest.
The research suggests that sudden cardiac death in people under the age of 50 is mainly due to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome or cardiomyopathies. Younger adults diagnosed with these conditions should seek advice from their cardiologist on the risks associated with sexual activity. However, the overall incidence of death in these studies remains low, even in individuals with existing heart conditions.
While sex can have many positive effects on physical and mental health, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with sudden cardiac death. Understanding the underlying causes and risk factors can help individuals make informed decisions about their sexual activity and seek appropriate medical advice when necessary.
