Events such as wildfires, droughts, and irregular seasons have led to a significant impact on respiratory diseases and perinatal outcomes. With temperature changes affecting perinatal outcomes in 39 of the reviewed studies, it is clear that the impact of climate change on children’s health is multifaceted and far-reaching.

The study also found that air pollutants from climate events had a substantial impact on child health outcomes, particularly in relation to respiratory diseases. Increased concentrations of airborne particles coincided with a rise in the number of children presenting to hospitals with respiratory issues. This was particularly evident in areas affected by pollution from wildfire smoke, which is becoming more prevalent due to climate change. The authors of the study emphasized the dependence of children’s health issues on weather extremes, with cold extremes leading to respiratory diseases and droughts causing stunted growth in populations.

As global ecologist Corey Bradshaw from Flinders University in Australia expressed, climate change could have long-lasting implications for children around the world. The data collected in the research points to a future where childhood diseases are increasingly influenced by climate events. The impact on children’s health is not limited to high-income countries, as low- and middle-income countries are also at risk. The lack of research in these regions may mean that the true extent of the problem is underestimated, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change and its effects on child health.
