Sitting for long periods of time has been linked to various health risks, including an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. However, a recent study conducted by researchers at Soochow University in China suggests that there may be a simple way to counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting: drinking coffee.
The study, which involved over 10,000 participants in the United States, found that individuals who drink coffee daily may be protected from the harmful effects of sitting for six or more hours a day. In fact, sedentary coffee drinkers were found to be 1.58 times less likely to die of all causes compared to those who do not drink coffee and sit for the same amount of time.
The most interesting finding of the study was that the negative effects of sitting were only observed among adults who did not consume coffee. Those who led a sedentary lifestyle but consumed coffee experienced a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, regardless of the amount of coffee they consumed. Moreover, those who drank more than two and a half cups of coffee a day also had a lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers who sat for at least six hours a day.
The study could not pinpoint the exact reasons why coffee has a protective effect against the harms of sitting, but previous research has suggested that caffeine in the blood may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, decaffeinated coffee is rich in antioxidants that can help boost metabolism and reduce inflammation. Certain compounds in coffee may also protect the brain from degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.
While the findings of the study are promising, more research is needed to fully understand the health benefits of coffee. Ideal dosages, specific compounds responsible for the protective effects, and the mechanisms behind these benefits all require further exploration. Previous studies have also found that the benefits of coffee may vary based on the amount consumed, with some studies suggesting that more than five cups a day may not offer additional benefits.
The study by researchers at Soochow University highlights the potential of coffee to offset the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. While the exact mechanisms behind this protective effect are still unclear, the findings suggest that regular consumption of coffee may be beneficial for overall health and longevity. Further research is needed to fully understand the complex compounds in coffee and their potential health benefits.
